Preppy?
Being an avid blog reader, I have stumbled onto
many blogs that tout themselves as “preppy" - with excessive amounts of pink and green and monograms. I wonder....

Then one day at work, we had, as you so often do when things are slow, one of those group conversations
about being preppy. It started when a particular client came in for class and
the comment was made about her being so preppy. I have to admit, I have never
seen her in anything but a Lilly dress, but I have only seen her once. And it is summer.

Nevertheless,
Lilly does not a preppy make.

What passes today as “preppy” is for a most
part a fantasized ideal of make-believe history. It is a manufactured past that distorts the
classically rooted values which gave birth to the preppy culture.
It started mostly at New England prep schools
and ivy walled colleges.

But the roots of preppy style can also be traced to a
focus on social achievement, uniformity of style, propriety, proper decorum and
class distinction.
So typical me, I devised a "preppy test." Simple, yet effective.

Define Quoddy Mocs
Quoddy footwear is made by hand in Maine. The
art of hands sewing shoes goes back hundreds of years in Maine, and generations

What is a Nantucket Red?
Nantucket Reds are a style of trousers
distributed by Murray's Toggery Shop on the island of Nantucket. Nantucket Reds are originally inspired by cotton trousers worn in
Brittany. A characteristic of Reds is that they fade to a "dusty
rose" as they age. Reds are worn predominantly by summer residents of
Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard, and Cape Cod in place of khakis or chinos.

Where is Wiscasset?
Wiscasset is in Maine. Every real prep would
know that.
One last thought.....
I've
always thought that a few things the preppy house needs is a good
dog, a good book and good tweed. With summer fast approaching, I guess it is good
madras?
Not a preppy. Never even considered the thought.
